What is self esteem?
Self esteem is basically our concept of self worth. It’s about how we relate to and feel about ourselves.
We are constantly exposed to images of supermodels, celebrities, TV personalities and movie stars on our television screens, on advertising boards and in magazines. Some people might aspire to be like these people and feel inadequate when they realise they will never be like them
Other causes of low self esteem may be bullying, living with or having lived with an intimidating person, a bad boss or critical friends for example.
Also we have noticed that people with low self esteem seem to give themselves a lot of negative self talk. That is they are mostly putting themselves down by the way they think about themselves and their abilities.
Of course there are many other ways for a person to have developed low self esteem. Most importantly, low self esteem has been recognised as a learnt behaviour. Like any behaviour that has been learnt, it can be unlearnt too.
